Prepare for Victory (Park): Sityodtong LA’s Annual Picnic

In case you haven’t noticed the huge banner hanging at the gym, Sityodtong LA’s annual family picnic is happening this Sunday, August 21 from 11am to 3pm.

Jim and Fury losing the 3-legged race in 2006

Spend the afternoon getting to know your fellow Sityodtong LA students when you’re not all dripping with sweat and gasping for breath (funny thing is, you actually might not recognize them). There’s going to be food (make sure you sign up on the potluck sheet at the front desk to bring something), fun and games. Lots of games. Competitive ones. Ones like the watermelon eating contest in 2006, when I came in second to Alex Anoushian and have vowed to win ever since in an epic rematch. Or the three-legged race, in which my son and I came in dead last (there’s nowhere to go but up).

It all goes down at Victory Park in Pasadena. Bring your family, bring a friend, bring a camera. It’s going to be a lot of fun and we promise, no duckwalks.

Do you know someone in law enforcement?

If the answer is yes, then let them know that all law enforcement personnel can train at Sityodtong Los Angeles for 50% off. They do their part to keep us safe, so let’s do ours to help them accomplish that.

To get the law enforcement 50% discount, students must present a valid law enforcement ID.

Hey, if this is successful, maybe we’ll extend that discount to bakers. This world is a better place when there’s plenty of cupcakes to go around.

2011 Thailand Muay Thai Tour: November 14 – 30

You thought we were serious about Muay Thai? Try going to Thailand, where they eat, sleep and breathe the sport from the moment they graduate from their Huggies. At Sityodtong LA, we offer our students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and train at the camp that started it all: the legendary Sityodtong Camp in Pattaya, Thailand.

Go for the culture, go for the training, go for the chance to compete. Whatever your reason, it promises be an unforgettable experience. Just ask anyone who’s ever been there, including these familiar faces:

How do you say "kicking ass" in Thai?

How do you get in on this? For starters, don’t be the fifth person to sign up for it, since there are only 4 spots left. Also, you need to beg, borrow or earn (we don’t take kindly to stealing – even if it is to train at Sityodtong) $3,800. That will cover your airfare, hotel, training and local transportation. Next, you’ll need to let Kru Walt know you’re in.

Before you know it, you’ll be training at arguably the most famous Muay Thai training camp in the world, watching world-class Muay Thai fights at Lumpinee Stadium, and perhaps putting on the gloves yourself (but not at Lumpinee — one step at a time, champ!).

Sityodtong Fight News: Glen “Mega” gets in the ring

Come support Sityodtong LA Assistant Coach Glen “Mega” Spencer, as he fights on the amateur card at the M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship, taking place at the Commerce Casino on August 14.

Recent Fight Results

  • Congrats to Travis Ramirez for his recent victory at the Annual Lotus Festival in Echo Park (if anyone has pictures please email them to me at jim@sityodtongla and I will post them here).
  • Andy Lazarit and Anthony Cardoza lost their recent matches at Commerce Casino, but in true Sityodtong style brought the fight, got back up and will be better, stronger and faster the next time they step in the ring.

Sityodtong Kids Jump for Charity

As you may have noticed, we have a training ground for the next generation of Sityodtong fighters, trainers and team members right around the corner at Kid Power.

While Sityodtong prepares us for victory, Kid Power prepares kids for life. The Kid Power Jump Rope Competition held recently embodied that spirit. Our Eagles (10-14 yrs old), Stingrays (7-9 yrs old) and Tigers (5-6 yrs old) all gathered ropes and mustered up their best cardio and coordination skills to see who could jump the most in 15 seconds. While the goal was to win, the point was more important: “What’s more important than winning? Not quitting!”

But… it’s also great to win! And the winners in the top 3 places all got well-deserved trophies. The winning scores for the 15 second rounds were as follows:

Eagles: 59 revolutions
Stingrays: 55 revolutions
Tigers: 42 revolutions

It’s also great to give back to the community. And that they did as well. Proceeds from the event went to the South Pasadena Ronald McDonald House.

Great job, kids!

Welcome to the Sityodtong Blog

Sawadee Krup! Welcome to the Sityodong Los Angeles blog. If it’s happening at Sityodtong, you’ll find out about it here. And if it’s not here, then let me know so that I can fix that.

I guess the first step is to tell you who I am. My name is Jim and I’m a longtime member of Sityodtong LA (I joined in 2003). You probably won’t recognize me for a few reasons. First, I just re-joined the gym after a 4+ year absence (pesky thing called a job kept me in the office too late to make practice – I’ve since replaced it with a less pesky one). Second, I have a few more grey hairs than I did back in my prime. Ok, I have a few more hairs in general since I grew it out.

Ain't as good as I once was

Jim, circa 2004. Seven years younger, 20 pounds lighter. Sigh.

Point is, if you see me (and you have news), let me know and I will do my best to post it here. If not, you can always email me at jim@sityodtongla.com. Also, send me pictures of fights and/or events that our fighters compete in so that I can post them and give them their due glory.

See you in the ring!
